Heat Injury Prevention

What is a heat injury?
You are at risk for a heat injury on hot OR humid days.
When it’s hot or when you are exerting yourself your body uses sweating to keep your temperature fairly constant. There are times, however, when sweating is not effective and your body temperature rises. This can lead to heat injury and untreated heat injury can lead to organ damage and death.
Mild heat injury is called “heat exhaustion” and has symptoms such as heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, dizziness, and nausea.
More severe heat injury, called “heatstoke”, has symptoms such as high body temperature (above 103 deg F), hot/dry skin, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea and confusion.
You don’t have to have Heat Exhaustion before you have Heatstroke! Heat injuries can occur indoors!

What can I do to help prevent heat injury?
• Listen to weather forecasts and advisories so you can be prepared.
• Spend as much time as possible in an air conditioned environment. If you don’t have working air conditioning at home consider shopping malls, public libraries, or public health sponsored heat relief shelter. If no air conditioning, use a fan at least.
• Avoid working or playing outside at the hottest times of the day. Use shade whenever possible.
• Wear weather appropriate clothing.
• Drink plenty of fluids. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink. Avoid drinks containing alcohol, large amounts of sugar, or caffeine. If your doctor limits your fluid intake or has you on a water pill, ask them how much you should drink when it’s hot.

Oops, I think I (or someone else) may have a heat injury. What do I do?
Simple – Get out of the heat and seek medical treatment as soon as possible, even if you have to call 911.

It’s my Friday…

Okay, well not really…but I have a day long seminar in Indy tomorrow, so no workie! That’s gotta count, right? LOL 😀

yesterday’s day long seminar was really interesting, I learned that while the National Guard quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it’s not a duck aka Regular Army. And the issues that service members from the NG have can be more intense than an RA service member. So be kind to all services, bottom line!!

And to the person that keeps resetting my clock in my office, knock it off! It was funny the first time, now this is just getting pathetically ridiculous. Need a life??

Also, so the state, Indiana, is on a Burn Ban. Meaning no burning! Sounds simple enough right? Most of the counties are cancelling the Independence Day fireworks, I get that. No burning, means no sparks. So imagine my surprise on the way to work, when I pass a sign…. “No Burn Ban on buying Fireworks!!” uh yeah….I’d like to see this idiot get fined for that. Just my opinion. It’s bad enough that I’ll be scared this weekend, when my ____ neighbors go outside and start firing off their weapons, aka guns, rifles, shotguns…get the picture? They shoot in the air. Alas, I don’t know if they understand how gravity works? Those bullets will be coming back down, and they are STILL very dangerous! OY! what has happened to common sense? I know, it’s extinct, right?

So please if you live where the temp is in the triple digits, stay hydrated, put on your sunblock, and stay cool. Screw the water bill…take showers, or fill up the bathtub and soak in the cool/cold water! Whatever it takes. Keep your pets shaded and hydrated, watch your kids, and please check on your elderly neighbors.

Have an Awesome Thursday!! (aka my Friday) LOL 😀

Behind-the-Illustration: The Gold Wyrm

Beautiful!!

Aaron McConnell

The Great Gold Wyrm is the world’s protector and the inspiration for holy orders of paladins and independent heroes. Although the Gold Wyrm’s physical form seals the gap that prevents the Abyss from erupting into the world, its dreams and the agents it employs still move through the world, helping those who will fight and even die for what’s right.  –From the 13th Age icon teaser description

The Great Gold Wyrm brought to life by Lee Moyer’s mastery of digital painting.  This was another one that floored me when I first saw it.   You’ll notice that the painting really goes beyond my  pencil drawing (below).  It’s not just thousands of scales for vanity’s sake, though.  I’m sure  in the modern world of dragons there are those who have their scales multiplied to fulfill some concept of beauty, but the reason the Gold Wyrm has this many scales is simply…

NAIL ART TUTORIAL: POLKA DOT BIKINI

cute!

polishyoupretty

‘She wore an itsy bitsy teenie weenie polka dot bikini’… this song was the inspiration behind today’s tutorial, obviously! We are still in full beach mode & thought today’s tutorial would be perfect now that Summer is in full swing.

Step 1: After applying a base coat, we recommend CND – Toughen Up, paint nails 2 coats of Zoya – Avery. This shade is great for our skin tone because it gives us ‘mannequin hands’ – which is exactly what we are after for this look! Try to find a base shade that matches your skin tone best for this design.

Step 2: Pick your bikini colours – we used Essie – Cascade Cool, Sally Hansen – Lively Lilac, China Glaze – Secret Peri-winkle & Color Club – Blue-Ming. Begin by creating a line near the base of your nails for the bottom part of the bikini top. Add two triangles…

The photos make me want to visit even more…if that’s possible? LOL

Little London Observationist

Following yesterday’s (late!) entry, after Borough Market and Gibbon’s Rent, Jorge and I took a stroll back over Tower Bridge. On the way we spotted a few interesting things. Of course, I took some photos. iPhone photos, but photos none-the-less…

But first I’ll kick it off with a gorgeous (also iPhone) photograph of the area taken by The Photo School:

More London

From Gibbon’s Rent, we walked by German artist Stephan Balkenhol’s wooden “Couple” sculptures on Tooley Street.

Marvelled how interesting the surrounding architecture becomes in the shadow of The Shard:

And of course the immensity of The Shard itself:

And we stumbled upon a few BT Art Boxes as well:

From the BT Art Boxes website:
“Inkie’s artbox ‘Fade to Black no. 2’ is based on tribal patterns and tattoo design with a 21st century pop art twist.”

From the BT Art Boxes website:
“Welcome to London. 230…

**Send your support directly to Sam: Sam Sommer, E571,  Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin,  P.O. Box 1997,  Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201-1997**

We’d like to introduce you to Sam. We’ve never met Sam, but he is our hero.

Sam is six years old, loves turtles, hates mint, and has recently been diagnosed with cancer: Actue meyloid lukemia.  He and his family have a long, tough fight ahead as they face weeks at the hospital, pain from cancer, pain from treatment, and physical and emotional exhaustion.  His family has set up a blog, Superman Sam,  to report on his progress and share his adventures with his nurses and new friends in the Hematology/Oncology/Transplant ward.

As a story lover and six year-old boy, Sam loves superheroes. As a six year-old, Sam doesn’t yet grasp the enormity of the world or the healing power we all have and can share with each other. Sam’s…

We’re under a heat advisory…

And oh yeah, it’s dreadful outside. so if you are in Indiana, or anywhere that the temperature is high. Please be careful.

a few tips;
hydrate yourself with WATER! caffeine dehydrates you. I know, I love my coffee too, but it’s really not good on you!

wear sunblock-reapply when it’s sweated off. Trust me, you want to use sunblock, it’s your friend!! You don’t look good with blisters, red skin or peeling skin.

one of my favorite new tips from my friend, Jon Riggle. Take a bandana, and wrap an ice cube or more in it. Wrap it up, and then tie with the cubes on the back of your neck. Ahhh, instant relief! I’m getting a few ice cubes now, myself. Spent lunch outside.

and funny, it wasn’t the water that caused the Wicked Witch to melt. It was the humidity! lol sorry, heat exposure makes my brain think weird things. Well, weirder than usual. LOL 😀

stay cool! Watch your pets, and please look into your elderly neighbors-make sure that they are okay!! Thank you!
