Limba noastră 2013
August 31, 2013 in Moldova

Limba noastră is celebrated on August 31, 2013. Limba noastra (English: “Our language”) is a public holiday in Moldova. On August 27, 1989, the Popular Front of Moldova organized a mass demonstration in Chişinău, that became known as the Great National Assembly, which pressured the authorities of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic to adopt a language law on August 31, 1989 that proclaimed the Moldovan language written in the Latin script to be the state language of the MSSR. Its identity with the Romanian language was also established. On June 23, 1990 the Moldovan Parliament established August 31 as a national language day.

Trail Mix Day
August 31, 2013 in the USA

National Trail Mix Day is observed on August 31, 2013. Trail mix is a combination of dried fruit, grains, nuts, and sometimes chocolate, developed as a snack food to be taken along on hikes. Trail mix is considered an ideal snack food for hikes, because it is lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious, providing a quick energy boost from the carbohydrates in the dried fruit or granola, and sustained energy from fats in nuts.

Both Hadley Fruit Orchards and Harmony Foods (two California growers) claim that trail mix was first invented in 1968 by two California surfers who blended peanuts and raisins together for an energy snack. However, trail mix is also mentioned in Jack Kerouac’s 1958 novel The Dharma Bums as the two main characters describe their planned meals in their preparation for a hiking trip.

Day of the Disappeared
August 30, 2013 in the World

International Day of the Disappeared is observed on August 30, 2013. It is a day created to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives and/or legal representatives.

The impulse for the day came from the Latin American Federation of Associations for Relatives of Detained-Disappeared (Federación Latinoamericana de Asociaciones de Familiares de Detenidos-Desaparecidos, or FEDEFAM), a non-governmental organization founded in 1981 in Costa Rica as an association of local and regional groups actively working against secret imprisonment and forced disappearances in a number of Latin-American countries.

Work on secret imprisonment is an important part of the activities for a number of international bodies and organizations in the fields of human rights activism and humanitarian aid. But the definition of the Missing or the Disappeared goes far beyond the victims of enforced disappearance. It includes all those whose families have lost contact as the result of conflicts, natural disasters or other tragedies.

RoastingMarshmallow
Toasted Marshmallow Day
August 30, 2013 in the World

Toasted Marshmallow Day takes place on August 30, 2013. A popular camping or backyard tradition in North America and Australia is the roasting or toasting of marshmallows over a campfire or other open flame. A marshmallow is placed on the end of a stick or skewer and held carefully over the fire. This creates a caramelized outer skin with a liquid, molten layer underneath.

According to individual preference, the marshmallows are heated to various degrees – from gently toasted to a charred outer layer. Often, the latter is achieved by igniting the marshmallow. The toasted marshmallow can either be eaten whole or the outer layer can be removed and consumed separately and the rest of the marshmallow toasted again. S’mores are made by placing a toasted marshmallow on a slice of chocolate which is placed between two graham crackers. These can then be squeezed together

More Herbs, Less Salt Day
August 29, 2013 in the World

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is often easier said than done – it takes thought, time and effort to prepare fresh and nutritious food, when less healthy options are often much easier and more convenient!

More Herbs, Less Salt Day encourages you to take a simple step to re-align this balance, through the use of herbs in home-cooked dishes in place of salt. It doesn’t take much room or effort to grow a variety of fresh herbs, and a little rosemary, thyme, mint or other herbs can do just as much to enrich a dish as a heavy dose of salt.

Late August is a very appropriate time to celebrate this special day. The harvest of garden herbs is at a peak. There’s nothing better than fresh garden herbs in your favorite recipes.

Day against Nuclear Tests
August 29, 2013 in the World

International Day against Nuclear Tests takes place on August 29, 2013. It was established on December 2, 2009 at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly by the resolution 64/35, which was adopted unanimously. The resolution in particular calls for increasing awareness “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world”.

The resolution was initiated by Kazakhstan together with several sponsors and cosponsors to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991. Following the establishment of the International Day against Nuclear Tests, in May 2010 all state parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons committed themselves to “achieve the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons”.

Good, bad, eh it is what it is… ?

Well I’m a horrible type A personality, which I’ve knocked down to an A- LOL

I started a series for last Halloween season, and I’ve been working on it sporadically.
so I’ll be posting it this September and going through October. 😀 That’s the game plan!! Now to see if I can locate the notebook I have been writing in. Once again Mr. OCD traits has re-arranged my desk to his standards. Love the man, dearly. But… He truly has to stop messing with my personal areas. :p
Thank goodness he knows not to touch the altars. I keep telling him, I’m going to go into his sock drawer and put all his socks together with different ones. Honestly, they are all the same to me. but not to him. I shouldn’t be so mean, huh? LOL
I’ve texted him, and he’s drawing me a map now to placement on my desk. No Joke!! oi…

so wish me luck, because I really want to get these thoughts on line, before Samhain this year. Woot! I have a goal now. Love Goals. 😀 (remember type A personality…) 😛

Just Because Day
August 27, 2013 in the World

On August 27, 2013 is Just Because Day. Why? Just because! It is believed that it was founded in 2005 as a chance to do something without a rhyme or reason. Reason is the ability of the human mind to form and operate on concepts in abstraction, in an ordered and usually a goal-oriented manner. Often you do something because you have to, or you want to, or it’s expected of you. None of those applies today.

If you’ve ever wanted to act on a strange impulse but without any logical motivation to do so, normally you still don’t. But don’t let that stop you on Just Because Day! You could start with the first thing that comes to your mind. Maybe you think about buying something without a need, think about walking backwards or throwing spitballs on the floor. Just feel free to do this just because.

This entry is inspired by a radio talk show that is driving me bazonkers!! And dangit, my radio can’t get any other station.

So I’m sick and tired of pretending…pretending to be what society wants me to be…nah, that’s not right either. Society- well some of it, is okay with me. I’m sick of what others think of me. okay, that might work! 😛

So who am I?
I’m a disabled Veteran, a Wiccan, a smartass and a nice person! That’s it in a nutshell. But what gets me in issues is that I’m a Wiccan. OMG! So my spiritual path is different than yours (maybe) but that doesn’t make me wrong or evil. There are many paths to the divine, I don’t bash yours, don’t attempt to burn me! I’m a smartass, and speak sarcasm fluently-see above- it’s a defense coping mechanism. Oh yeah, I’m a therapist too. lol
I like to think I’m a fairly smart person as well, my life experiences and education are probably different than yours. It doesn’t make it wrong, diversity is necessary for life. If we were all the same, it would be freaking boring and annoying.
I’m a geek, nerd, dork what ever label you want to give me, I wear ’em all proudly! I dress up for Con’s, it’s fun!! And I don’t stand out like the newbies. I still read comics, watch cartoons and gush over the latest geek news. And yes, I’m a Woman!! 😀

The main thing I’m trying to get across here, stop believing the stereotypes!!
I really am a nice person, once you get to know me. And that’s the thing, people hear I’m a Witch and automatically they want nothing to do with me. That’s sad! 😦 You could be missing out on a wonderful friendship. But you’ll never know.

okay, I think I got it out… now then have an Awesome Monday!!
the other impetus for this entry, Pagan Pride day is right around the corner, and I already see the people that don’t want us to have a nice day! And I’ve started wearing my pentacle and the Goddess on the Moon jewelry. I have to keep it hidden underneath my shirt. For fear I might scare the normies! (said in humor-see Monster High) le sighs…
And omg, I certainly can’t discuss why I’m getting so excited!! And wish me luck getting the next few Wiccan Holiday’s off, I only ask for three: Samhain, Yule and Midsummer. These three have the most personal significance for me. I celebrate all the holidays on the wheel. )O( Blessed BE! Embrace Tolerance and Diversity!!

My jewelry, and I have the earrings to match the Goddess on the Moon, and yes, I am wearing them. LOL 😀

Namibia Day 2013
August 26, 2013 in Namibia

Namibia Day takes place on August 26, 2013. Namibia Day or Heroes’ Day is a national public holiday in Namibia. It is recognized by the United Nations as Namibia Day. The day commemorates the Namibian War of Independence which began on 26 August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe. National celebrations take place annually at different places, usually in the north of Namibia near important battle zones. Hundreds of people annually gather to watch leaders such as Hifikepunye Pohamba, Sam Nujoma and Nahas Angula officially commemorate veterans of the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia, SWAPO’s military wing during the War. Likewise, honours, such as military medals, are handed out on the day. Heroes’ Acre, a war memorial outside of Windhoek, was opened on Heroes’ Day in 2002. It is also the same day that the United Nations Institute for Namibia, a tertiary educational body in Zambia under the auspices of the United Nations and forerunner to the University of Namibia, was inaugurated in 1976.

Dog Day
August 26, 2013

No one can win hearts like man’s best friend and in honour of this bond between man and canine, Dog Day is celebrated.

Take time to appreciate the love and value that dogs bring to our daily lives, and to do your bit for homeless and abused dogs the world over. From keeping us safe working for the emergency services to supporting people who are blind, deaf or disabled, dogs do a lot for us humans, and this is an opportunity to give something back.

Recommendations for ways to celebrate Dog Day range from adopting a dog from a rescue home to giving your dog a holistic spa treatment or even buying yourself and your dog matching t-shirts.

The National Dog Day Foundation supports all breeds and varieties of dogs and discourages purchasing from unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills; instead, support reputable breeders or adopt from rescue homes.

Dog Day has been supported by such high profile individuals as former US President George W Bush whose own dog, Barney the Scottish terrier has his own website and has even starred in a series of short films. So celebrate dogs and their varied talents today, both by taking the time to treat the dogs in your own life and by supporting dogs in need.

Women’s Equality Day
August 26, 2013 in the USA

Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26, 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was signed. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women’s Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed designating August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day.

Women’s rights are the rights and entitlements claimed for women and girls of many societies worldwide. In some places these rights are institutionalized or supported by law, local custom, and behaviour, whereas in others they may be ignored or suppressed. They differ from broader notions of human rights through claims of an inherent historical and traditional bias against the exercise of rights by women and girls in favour of men and boys.

Issues commonly associated with notions of women’s rights include, though are not limited to, the right: to bodily integrity and autonomy; to vote (suffrage); to hold public office; to work; to fair wages or equal pay; to own property; to education; to serve in the military or be conscripted; to enter into legal contracts; and to have marital or parental rights.
