October 4, 2013 in the USA

National Golf Day is a major charitable event, sponsored annually since 1952 by the PGA.

On National Golf Day, all of the over 4,300 professional members of the PGA are encouraged to play golf with contributors. The entry fees of contributors goes towards a wide range of charitable causes. Each year, a top ranked golfer is made chairman of this event. This is a truely admirable and worthy event. Many golf course hold their own events, with the proceeds going to charities.

After a bit of research, the staff at National Whatever Day has no idea when National Golf Day should be celebrated. According to some holiday calendar sites National Golf Day is celebrated on October 3rd of each year, but we found some conflicting information. Many golf related sites, report this day on varying dates in June.

So, it seems that National Golf Day may be celebrated throughout the year whenever it is convenient for you, even if it means celebrating more than once a year.

Frappe Day
October 4, 2013 in the USA

One might consider Frappes to have an identity crisis. It’s made of many different things. The dictionary definition of Frappes is that it is an ice cream beverage drink. So, what’s with all of the confusion? First of all, some definitions and recipes, are the same as the ingredients for a milkshake. Also, many frappe recipes do not call for ice cream at all. Some use whipped cream. Other recipes use yogurt in place of ice cream. Other recipes still, include alcohol.

A frappe is a chilled or frozen drink originating from the French word “frapper” meaning to chill. In today’s caffeinated society, a frappe is often thought of as a coffee drink. This may be due to Starbucks who popularized their brand of a frappe, Frappuccino, in 1995. Even tough coffee is the most popular flavor of frappe, it can be made with any flavor such as fruit.

According to popular legend, coffee style frappe was invented in September 1957 when a Nestle sales representative, Dimitrios Vakondios ran out of hot water. Vakondios was in the middle of a instant coffee presentation when he discovered there was no hot water for the mixture. Instead of giving up, he reached for a shaker meant for Nesquick and filled it with the instant coffee and a bit of cold water. This chilled, foamy concoction was an instant hit!

World Smile Day
October 4, 2013 in the World

The World Smile Day is celebrated on October 04, 2013. The idea of World Smile Day was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. He is known to have created the yellow Smiley Face in 1963. The World’s first World Smile Day was held in the year 1999 and has been held annually since.

After Harvey died in 2001, the “Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation” was created to honour his name and memory. The slogan of the Smile Foundation is “improving this world, one smile at a time.” The Foundation continues as the official sponsor of World Smile Day each year.

A smiley, or happy face, is a stylized representation of a smiling human face. It is commonly represented as a yellow (many other colors are also used) circle or sphere with two black dots representing eyes and a black half circle representing the mouth. “Smiley” is also sometimes used as a generic term for any emoticon.
