November 17-23 Winter Weather Preparedness Week

Governor Pence has proclaimed November 17-23, 2013 as Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.

To help Hoosiers prepare for this the Indiana State Police offers the following tips.

Be prepared:
Ø Before traveling, check the forecast and let someone know your travel route
Ø Keep your gas tank at least half-full
Ø Carry a winter driving kit that should include blankets, flashlight, extra batteries, a brightly colored cloth, sand (or kitty litter), shovel, candle, matches, non-perishable high calorie food, first aid kit, and jumper cables
Ø Have a cell phone and charger cord
Ø Slow down on snow/ice covered roads
Ø Allow extra time to arrive at your destination
Ø Clear all vehicle windows of ice and snow. Remove snow from hood, roof and lights.
Ø Use extra caution when driving across bridges, underpasses, shaded areas and intersections where ice is slow to melt
Ø Avoid abrupt stops and starts. Slow down gradually.

Should you become stranded:
Ø Don’t leave your car. It’s the best protection you have.
Ø Tie a brightly colored cloth to your antenna
Ø Roll down your window a small amount to allow fresh air in your vehicle
Ø Keep exhaust pipe free of blockage to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Ø Don’t panic. An idling car uses approximately one gallon of gas per hour

World Kindness Day
November 13, 2013 in the World

The World Kindness Day is on November 13, 2013. It is a day that encourages individuals to overlook boundaries, race and religion. According to modern psychology, altruistic acts increases our own happiness in a profound way.

The World Kindness Day was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement. It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Japan, Australia, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates.

Kindness is the act or the state of being kind – ie. marked by goodness and charitable behaviour, mild disposition, pleasantness, tenderness and concern for others. It is known as a virtue, and recognized as a value in many cultures and religions.

Wordsworth said; “the best bits of a man’s life are the simple, random acts of kindness and love”.

An American folk event, Sadie Hawkins Day is a pseudo-holiday that originated in Al Capp’s classic hillbilly comic strip, Li’l Abner (1934–1978). This inspired real-world Sadie Hawkins dances, where girls ask boys out.

Indian Pudding Day
November 13, 2013 in the USA

National Indian Pudding Day is observed on November 13, 2013. Indian pudding is a traditional New England dessert, “a cold-weather classic”. Seventeenth-century English colonists brought hasty pudding to North America and transformed it completely.

Lacking wheat, they substituted cornmeal, a grain they learned to cultivate from the indigenous peoples, which led to the new name Indian pudding, derived from their name for cornmeal, Indian meal. They substituted milk, which was plentiful, for water and added locally available sweeteners, either molasses or maple syrup, and spices when available, typically cinnamon and ground ginger.

Other traditional ingredients include butter and eggs for a smoother consistency and raisins and nuts for flavor and contrasting texture. Finally, Indian pudding is baked in a slow oven for several hours, transforming its texture from the porridge-like quality of hasty pudding to a smoother texture more typical of custard puddings.

The 20th century’s commercial puddings with their industrially perfect smooth consistency displaced Indian pudding and its cooking time had little appeal for the modern home cook. It is still associated with autumn holidays and occasionally revived by restaurants. It is usually served warm and sometimes accompanied by vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
