Peculiar People Day
January 10, 2014 in the World

Peculiar People Day is in honor of uniquely different people. Un-ordinary, extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal, and quirky…. These are all things that we think of to describe the word “peculiar”. Most of these characteristics can be viewed as good, or not so good. Today is a day to look for the good in your peculiar acquaintances.

If you are peculiar, this is your day to be honored and appreciated. Chances are, you will find something peculiar about yourself, if you look hard enough. If you can’t find anything peculiar about yourself, then give some recognition and appreciation to your quirky friends and family.

Houseplant Appreciation Day
January 10, 2014 in the World

With Christmas trees and poinsettias decking our halls for the last few weeks, our beloved figs and philodendrons have likely been neglected. Today’s the day to give them a bath, sing them a song and put them back in their sunny spots … it’s “Houseplant Appreciation Day!”

Middle school science fairs are never lacking in experiments testing the effects of music or poetry on the growth of house plants. But in reality, much well-respected scientific research has been done on the subject as well. Frank W. Telewski’s “A Unified Hypothesis of Mechanoperception in Plants,” is one such study. All in all, Telewski’s findings support the theory that plants, do indeed, respond to sound.

So if you want to be the envy of your garden club, don’t forget to tuck in your comrades of chlorophyll with a good night serenade … perhaps “The Garden Song” by Dave Mallett?
