Land Day 2014
March 30, 2014 in Palestine

Land Day is celebrated on March 30, 2014. Land Day is an annual day of commemoration for Palestinians of the events of that date in 1976. In response to the Israeli government’s announcement of a plan to expropriate thousands of dunams of land for “security and settlement purposes”, a general strike and marches were organized in Arab towns from the Galilee to the Negev. In the ensuing confrontations with the Israeli army and police, six Arab citizens were killed, about one hundred were wounded, and hundreds of others arrested.

I am in Control Day
March 30, 2014 in the USA

I Am in Control Day in an ironic reminder that we are not always in control. President Ronald Reagan had only been in office for 69 days when an attempt was made on his life. His lung was punctured by a bullet. The date was March 30, 1981. Reagan survived the assassination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr.

In the White House, then Secretary of State Alexander Haig was taken a little out of context when he said “I am in control here”. Instead of focusing upon the entire statement (“Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the President, the Vice President and the Secretary of State in that order, and should the President decide he wants to transfer the helm to the Vice President, he will do so. He has not done that. As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, pending return of the Vice President and in close touch with him.”), people and the press foscused upon these few words. Political uproar eventually led to his resignation.

Haig’s “I’m in control” statement lives on in infamy and on that infamous day, I am in Control Day was born.

History sometimes fades with time. Alexander Haig’s statement was all but forgotten. Meanwhile, this special day continued on, and evolved. People came to think about this day in a different context. They personalized it into a day to get their life in control. In that sense, today is definitely a call to action. “I am in Control Day” is your chance to get things in order and under control.

Most likely, the first step is to take a deep breath and relax. Now, assess the situation, and………. get things under control. Once you have accomplished this today, you can work on staying in control everyday.

National Doctor’s Day
March 30, 2014 in the USA

National Doctor’s Day takes place on March 30, 2014. National Doctor’s Day is commonly celebrated in healthcare organizations as a day to recognize the contributions of doctors to individual lives and communities. These events are typically organized by staff at a healthcare organization. Staff may organize a lunch for doctor’s present the doctor with a gift, or coordinate a team lunch. Doctors Day marks the date that Crawford W. Long, M.D., of Jefferson, GA, administered the first ether anesthetic for surgery on March 30, 1842. On that day, Dr. Long administered ether anesthesia to a patient and then operated to remove a tumor from the man’s neck. Later, the patient would swear that he felt nothing during the surgery and was not aware the surgery was over until he awoke. The first Doctors Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included the mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors Day.

National Pencil Day
March 30, 2014 in the USA

Today is Pencil Day! On this day in 1858, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted the first-ever patent for a modern pencil with an eraser attached to it. Hymen Lipman created the wooden pencil and received high praise for how easy it was to use for writing and drawing.

Did you know that a single wooden pencil can write 45,000 words or draw a line that is 35 miles long? A pencil can also write under water, upside down, or in zero gravity. Manufacturers painted the first pencils yellow because the color was associated with royalty and honor. People quickly began assuming that yellow pencils were the best type!

To celebrate Pencil Day, set aside your laptop and use a pencil and paper to write today!

2nd March New Moon
March 30, 2014 in EST Eastern Standard Time / UTC-05

On March 30, 2014 the moon reaches its minimum brightness. Therefore it is called new moon. In astronomical terminology, the phrase new moon is the lunar phase that occurs when the Moon, in its monthly orbital motion around Earth, lies between Earth and the Sun, and is therefore in conjunction with the Sun as seen from Earth. At this time, the dark (unilluminated) portion of the Moon faces almost directly toward Earth, so that the Moon is not visible to the naked eye.

The original meaning of the phrase new moon was the first visible crescent of the Moon, after conjunction with the Sun. This takes place over the western horizon in a brief period between sunset and moonset, and therefore the precise time and even the date of the appearance of the new moon by this definition will be influenced by the geographical location of the observer. The astronomical new moon, sometimes known as the dark moon to avoid confusion, occurs by definition at the moment of conjunction in ecliptic longitude with the Sun, when the Moon is invisible from the Earth. This moment is unique and does not depend on location, and under certain circumstances it is coincident with a solar eclipse.
