Patriot Day 2014
September 11, 2014 in the USA
In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of the 2,993 killed in the September 11, 2001, attacks. Most Americans refer to the day as “Nine-Eleven (9/11),” “September Eleventh,” or some variation thereof.
U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407-0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.” President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (as Public Law 107-89). It is a discretionary day of remembrance.
Initially, the day was called the Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. On September 4, 2002, President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day.
On this day, the President directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House, and on all U.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 A.M. (Eastern Daylight Time), the time of the first plane crash on September 11, 2001.

National Day of Catalonia
September 11, 2014 in Catalonia
National Day of Catalonia is celebrated on September 11, 2014. The National Day of Catalonia is a day-long festival in Catalonia. It commemorates the defeat of the Catalan troops fighting during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Catalan troops that fought in support of the Habsburg dynasty’s claim to the Spanish throne were defeated at the Siege of Barcelona by the army of the Bourbon king Philip V of Spain on 11 September 1714 after 14 months of siege. The holiday was first celebrated in 11 September 1886, was suppressed by the Franco dictatorship in 1939 and reinstated in 1980 by the government of Catalonia, the Generalitat de Catalunya, upon its restoration after the Franco dictatorship. Independentist organizations and political parties traditionally lay floral offerings at the monuments of the leaders of the defence of the city Rafael Casanova and General Moragues for their fight against the king Philip V of Spain. Typically, Catalan nationalists organize demonstrations and meet at the Fossar de les Moreres of Barcelona, where they pay homage to the defenders of city who died during the siege and were buried there.

Jeûne genevois
September 11, 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland
Jeûne genevois takes place on September 11, 2014. Jeûne genevois (meaning Genevan fast) is a public holiday in the canton of Geneva, Switzerland which occurs on the Thursday following the first Sunday of September. It dates back to the 16th century. The religious fasting of Jeûne genevois is not widely followed. Plum pie is often served as dessert in Geneva homes on Jeûne genevois. Banks and post offices along with many shops, restaurants and bars close for the day. However, unlike Thanksgiving in the U.S., which also falls on a Thursday, a four-day weekend is not wontedly taken and most businesses are open on Friday.

Enkutatash 2014
September 11, 2014 in Ethiopia
Enkutatash takes place on September 11, 2014. Enkutatash is the first day of the New Year in Ethiopia. It occurs on Meskerem 1 on the Ethiopian calendar, which is 11 September or, during a leap year, 12 September according to the Gregorian calendar. The date marks the approximate end of the “rainy season”. It has also been associated traditionally with the return of the Queen of Sheba to Ethiopia following her visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem in ca. 980 BC. Large celebrations are held around the country, notably at the Ragual Church on Entoto mountain. But Enkutatash is not exclusively a religious holiday. Modern Enkutatash is also the season for exchanging formal new year greetings and cards among the urban sophisticated – in lieu of the traditional bouquet of flowers.

National Hot Cross Bun Day
September 11, 2014 in the USA
Today is National Hot Cross Bun Day! A hot cross bun is a sweet, spiced bun made with currants or raisins and leavened with yeast. Just as the name suggests, these baked goodies are marked with a cross on the top, which is supposed to symbolize the crucifixion.
In many Christian countries, these buns are traditionally eaten toasted or hot during Lent, starting on the evening before Ash Wednesday through midday on Good Friday.
So, why is National Hot Cross Bun Day six months after Good Friday? We don’t know! The origins of this day are unknown, but we’re thankful to have an excuse to enjoy this treat anytime of year! Enjoy!
