World Water Monitoring Day
September 18, 2014 in the World
World Water Monitoring Day was established in 2003 by America’s Clean Water Foundation as a global educational outreach program that aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies.
World Water Monitoring Day is celebrated on September 18. It was initially chosen to be a month later (October 18) to recognize the anniversary of the US Clean Water Act, which was enacted by the US Congress in 1972 to restore and protect the country’s water resources. In 2007, the date was changed to facilitate participation in parts of the world where temperatures reach freezing at that time.
In 2006, ACWF transferred coordination of the event to the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA).

Fiestas Patrias takes place on September 18, 2014. The Fiestas Patrias of Chile consists of two days: September 18, in commemoration of the proclamation of the First Governing Body of 1810, and marking the beginning of the Chilean independence process. Unofficially, the celebration can last for around a week, depending on when it falls. Most schools and jobs declare a week-long vacation for the holiday. The celebration of Fiestas Patrias is an expression of Chilean culture. Traditional activities associated with the Dieciocho include Chilean rodeo, dancing the cueca, going to fondas, and barbecue. Officially, activities on September 18 are centered around a religious celebration “Te Deum Ecuménico de Fiestas Patrias”.

National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day
September 18, 2014 in the USA
September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. The following facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underscore the importance of this annual observance:
• Adults aged 55 and older accounted for 19% (217,300) of the estimated 1.1 million people living with HIV infection in the United States in 2010.
• Of the estimated 19,343 deaths among people living with diagnosed HIV infection in the United States in 2010, 10,244 (53%) were among people aged 50 and older. In 2010, HIV was the 10th leading cause of death among men and women aged 50 to 54.
• Older Americans are more likely than younger Americans to be diagnosed with HIV infection late in the course of their disease, meaning a late start to treatment and possibly more damage to their immune system. This can lead to poorer prognoses and shorter HIV-to-AIDS intervals.

Cheeseburger Day
September 18, 2014 in the USA
National Cheeseburger Day is celebrated on September 18, 2014. A cheeseburger is a hamburger topped with cheese. Traditionally, the slice of cheese is placed on top of the meat patty, but the burger can include many variations in structure, ingredients, and composition. The term itself is a portmanteau of the words “cheese” and “hamburger.” The cheese is usually added to the cooking hamburger patty shortly before the patty is completely cooked which allows the cheese to melt. Cheeseburgers are often served with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mustard, mayonnaise, or ketchup.
In fast food restaurants, the cheese used is typically processed cheese, but there are variations, such as cheddar, Swiss cheese, mozzarella, blue cheese and pepper jack. When cheese is added to a burger the nutritional value of the burger can be changed substantially. For example, a slice of Cheddar cheese can add 113 calories and 4.5 grams of saturated fat to a burger. Other types and amounts of cheese would have varying effects, depending on their nutritional content.
