General Events:
Persons Day 2014
October 18, 2014 in Canada
Persons Day is celebrated on October 18, 2014. Persons Day is an annual celebration in Canada. The day commemorates the case of Edwards v. Canada (Attorney General), more commonly known as The Persons Case – a famous Canadian constitutional case decided on October 18, 1929 by the Judicial Committee of the Imperial Privy Council, at that time the court of last resort for Canada, which held that women were eligible to sit in the Canadian Senate. While not a civic holiday, several women’s groups across Canada make significant note of the day, including The Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund and The Canadian Voters Congress.

No Beard Day 2014
October 18, 2014 in the World
No Beard Day is celebrated on October 18, 2014. As the name suggests, one should separate on this day from old “pigtails” and go through life with a smooth skin. It is made as an opportunity especially for those who can not imagine to live without a beard. And for those whose partner has ever asked for a shave. The great thing is that if the result of shaving seems unbearable, you can let yourself grow the beard again!
A beard is the collection of hair that grows on the chin, upper lip, cheeks and neck of human beings and some non-human animals. In humans, usually only pubescent or adult males are able to grow beards. However, women with hirsutism may develop a beard. When differentiating between upper and lower facial hair, a beard specifically excludes the moustache.
Over the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom, sexual virility, masculinity, or a higher status; however, beards may also be perceived to be associated with a lack of general cleanliness and a loss of refinement, particularly in modern times.

Alaska Day 2014
October 18, 2014 in Alaska
Alaska Day is observed on October 18, 2014. Alaska Day is a legal holiday in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is the anniversary of the formal transfer of the Territory of Alaska from Russia to the United States which occurred on Friday, October 18, 1867. On March 30, 1867 the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for the sum of $7.2 million.
It was not until October of that year that the Commissioners arrived in Sitka and the formal transfer was arranged. The formal flag-raising took place at Fort Sitka on October 18, 1867. The original ceremony included 250 uniformed U.S. soldiers, who marched to the Governor’s house at “Castle Hill”. Here the Russian troops lowered the Russian flag and the U.S. flag was raised.
Alaska Day was declared a state holiday in 1917 and is a paid holiday for state employees. The official celebration is held in Sitka, where schools release students early, many businesses close for the day, and events such as a parade and reenactment of the flag raising are held. It should not be confused with Seward’s Day, the last Monday in March, which commemorates the signing of the treaty for the Alaska Purchase in which the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia on March 30, 1867.

Sweetest Day 2014
October 18, 2014 in the USA
Sweetest Day is an observance celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes region, and parts of the Northeast United States, on the third Saturday in October (October 18 in 2014). It is described by Retail Confectioners International as an “occasion which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned, but also friends, relatives and associates whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.” Sweetest Day has also been referred to as a “concocted promotion” created by the candy industry solely to increase sales of sweets.
Sweetest Day commonly involves women giving their husband or boyfriends candy. While it is not as large or widely observed as Valentine’s Day, it is still celebrated in parts of the United States, despite persistent allegations of being a “Hallmark holiday.” Retail Confectioners International describes it as “much more important for candymakers in some regions than in others (Detroit, Cleveland and being the biggest Sweetest Day cities)”.
Sweetest Day was a promotion concocted by Cleveland confectioners in 1921. The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s October 8, 1921 edition, which chronicles the first Sweetest Day in Cleveland, states that the first Sweetest Day was planned by a committee of 12 confectioners chaired by candymaker C. C. Hartzell. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to “newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor” in Cleveland, Ohio. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee was assisted in the distribution of candy by some of the biggest movie stars of the day including Theda Bara and Ann Pennington.
