It Is What It Is

~~November 20, 2014~~

Ancient Japanese lore describes Koi fish swimming up a massive waterfall called “The Dragon Gate“. If they reach the top of the waterfall, they transforms into the legendary mythical creature. This legend defines perseverance and is one of the reasons koi fish are held in such high regard.

What Do Koi Fish Symbolize?

By Sue Lynn Carty
Koi fish are a common symbol in both Chinese culture and feng shui, depicted on artwork, clothing, tattoos and even with live fish used in landscape design.

~The Koi Fish Legend~

There are many ancient legends involving the koi fish. The oldest of the legends is the story of when Chinese philosopher Confucius was born a son in 533 B.C., King Shoko of Ro presented to him a magoy, a black carp, as a gift. According to this legend, all modern day koi, and their bright colors, are…

Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers! 😉

Kindness Blog

Videos like these are a refreshing reminder that together, people have unlimited amounts of strength.

In a CCTV video from Thursday, from eastern Zhejiang Province of China, a couple on a scooter is seen riding along a city street when suddenly they are hit by a vehicle.

The husband is thrown, while his wife is caught and pulled under what appears to be an Opel Astra Estate.

Her husband, along with a police officer who happened to be nearby, quickly band together to try to lift the car.

But with inspiring immediacy, motorists and other passers-by gather to combine their strength. A small army of good Samaritans joins to help.

The Herculean efforts of about 20 people raised the car high enough so the woman could be pulled to safety.

Last reports by local media were that the woman was recovering at her local hospital, which no doubt is thanks…

Calendar day; November 20, 2014

Thursday, the 20th of November, 2014 is the 324th day in 2014 and in the 47th calendar week.
General Events:
Universal Children’s Day
November 20, 2014 in the World
Universal Children’s Day takes place on November 20, 2014. First proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, it was established to encourage all countries to institute a day, firstly to promote mutual exchange and understanding among children and secondly to initiate action to benefit and promote the welfare of the world’s children. It was also chosen as the day to celebrate childhood and is celebrated annually.
November 20 is also the anniversary of the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959. The Convention on the Rights of the Child was then signed on the same day in 1989, which has since been ratified by 191 states. Universal Children’s Day is preceded by International Men’s Day on November 19 creating a 48 hour celebration of men and children respectively during which time the positive roles men play in children’s lives are recognized.
The legal definition of “child” generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. “Child” may also describe a relationship with a parent, such as sons and daughters of any age.

World Philosophy Day
November 20, 2014 in the World
World Philosophy Day is celebrated on November 20, 2014. World Philosophy Day was proclaimed by UNESCO to be celebrated every third Thursdayof November. It was first celebrated on 21 November 2002. Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language.
Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. In more casual speech, by extension, “philosophy” can refer to “the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group”.
The word “philosophy” comes from the Ancient Greek “philosophia”, which literally means “love of wisdom”. The introduction of the terms “philosopher” and “philosophy” has been ascribed to the Greek thinker Pythagoras. Philosophy is divided into many sub-fields. These include epistemology, logic, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics.

Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20, 2014 in the World
Transgender Day of Remembrance takes place on November 20, 2014. Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is a day to memorialize those who have been killed as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and acts to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community. The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1998 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender graphic designer, columnist, and activist, to memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. Since its inception, TDoR has been held annually on 20 November, and has slowly evolved from the web-based project started by Smith into an international day of action. Typically, a TDoR memorial includes a reading of the names of those who lost their lives during the previous year and may include other actions, such as candlelight vigils, art shows, food drives, film screenings, marches, among others. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is the culmination of Transgender Awareness Week.

Black Awareness Day
November 20, 2014 in Brazil
Black Awareness Day takes place on November 20, 2014. The Day of Black Awareness (“Dia da Consciência Negra” in Portuguese) is celebrated annually in Brazil. It is a day on which to reflect upon the injustices of slavery and to celebrate the contributions to society and to the nation by Brazilian citizens of African descent. It takes place during the Week of Black Awareness. The day is marked on the anniversary of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares (1655–1695), the last leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares. Members of the organization “Black Movement” organize educational and fun events involving mainly children of African descent. Their focus during these events is to dissolve the perception of Africans’ inferiority in society. Other “hot topics” in the black community during the Day of Black Awareness are the assimilation of African-Brazilian laborers with Caucasian-Brazilian and other laborers, ethnic identity, and black pride. Black Awareness Day has been celebrated since the 1960s and has only amplified its events in the last few years. Black Awareness Day used to be celebrated on 13th of May (the date of abolition of slavery in Brazil). However, Afro-Brazilians asked to change it to 20 of November to honor Zumbi’s death.

Great American Smokeout
November 20, 2014 in the USA
Great American Smokeout takes place on November 20, 2014. The Great American Smokeout is an annual social engineering event on the thirdThursday of November by the American Cancer Society. The event encourages Americans to stop tobacco smoking. The event challenges people to stop smoking cigarettes for 24 hours, hoping their decision not to smoke will last forever. The first Great American Smokeout was held in San Francisco’s Union Square on November 16, 1977. The event evolved from a series of smaller-scale initiatives. In 1970, in Randolph, Massachusetts, Arthur P. Mullaney suggested people give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money to a local high school. In 1974, a “Don’t Smoke Day” (or “D-Day”) was promoted by Lynn R. Smith of the Monticello Times in Monticello, Minnesota. On November 18, 1976, the California Division of the American Cancer Society successfully prompted nearly one million smokers to quit for the day. That California event marked the first Smokeout.

20-N 2014
November 20, 2014 in Spain
20-N is observed on November 20, 2014. 20-N is a symbolic abbreviation used to denote the date of death of two of the best known and controversial figures in 20th-century Spanish history. The first date, 20 November 1936, near the end of the first year of the Spanish Civil War, marks the execution in Alicante of 33-year-old José Antonio Primo de Rivera, the founder of the nationalist party, Falange Española, who became extolled as a cult figure during the years of post-Civil War Estado Español led by Francisco Franco. The second date, 39 years later, is 20 November 1975, when Generalissimo Franco himself – aged 82, and having ruled Spain for close to four decades as its caudillo (Spanish for leader) – died following a lengthy illness. The date continues to be commemorated by far-right groups which mark it by organizing public demonstrations.

National Absurdity Day
November 20, 2014 in the USA
This day was created as a day to recall and note some of the totally and absolutely absurd things in history, in our country and in our lives.
National Absurdity Day is also a day to have fun and do crazy, zany and absurd things.  Everyone has an excuse today to let the absurd antics that are hidden inside of them out.   You can do things that you have wanted to do that make absolutely no sense at all and it will be okay because you will be celebrating National Absurdity Day.
**My recomendation: celebrate National Absurdity Day with a screening of Ed Wood’s hilariously inept ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space,’ a sci-fi thriller about aliens who devise a plan to raise the dead in order to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon.
