Martyrs’ Day in Panama

Martyrs’ Day in Panama is observed on January 09, 2015. Martyrs’ Day is a Panamanian holiday which commemorates the January 9, 1964 riots over sovereignty of the Panama Canal Zone. The riot started after a Panamanian flag was torn during conflict between Panamanian students and Canal Zone Police officers, over the right of the Panamanian flag to be flown alongside the U.S. flag. U.S. Army units became involved in suppressing the violence after Canal Zone police were overwhelmed, and after three days of fighting, about 21 Panamanians and four U.S. soldiers were killed. The incident is considered to be a significant factor in the U.S. decision to transfer control of the Canal Zone to Panama through the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties.

The date was designated Balloon Ascension Day, after Jean Pierre Blanchard became the first man to successfully ascend in a balloon on the North American Continent. The original Balloon Ascension Day happened on Jan 9, 1793, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Blanchard landing in Woodbury, New Jersey. This event helped to spread the fascination of ballooning.
At the time of it’s inception, Balloon Ascension Day was only meant for the large, hydrogen-filled, silk balloons of the time but it has since expanded to include all kinds of balloons. The day is now for the recognition of all balloons, from small, helium-filled party balloons, to the massive, hot air balloons that have become commercially successful in modern times
Blanchard made history and created the basis for Balloon Ascension day. Ballooning may have lost popularity and prestige as the most advanced man-made flying machine, Balloon Ascension Day promises to keep Blanchard’s important achievement in memory and serves to recognize the wonder and simplicity of flight through ballooning.

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

On January 9th, 2015, Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. and partnering organizations in support of law enforcement officers nationwide will promote a National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.).
Each day 780,000 police officers across our country put a badge on and go to work knowing they may face extremely dangerous situations. On average, between 105 and 203 officers die in the line of duty each year, 50,000 officers are assaulted in the line of duty each year, 14,000 officers are injured in the line of duty each year, and over 300 officers commit suicide each year. There is no other profession in the world, except possibly the military, where you will find these kinds of statistics.
Law enforcement officers play such an integral part in our society. Without law enforcement officers, chaos would reign. Have you ever thought about what you would do if you were in trouble – a car accident, a home invasion, an assault – and you did not have someone to call for help? No matter how much abuse law enforcement takes, they continue to do their job, and do it well. They are the guardians of our way of life and they deserve our support.
