Saturday, the 10th of January, 2015 is the 10th day in 2015 and in the 2nd calendar week.

General Events:

Peculiar People Day
January 10, 2015 in the World

Peculiar People Day is in honor of uniquely different people. Un-ordinary, extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal, and quirky…. These are all things that we think of to describe the word “peculiar”. Most of these characteristics can be viewed as good, or not so good. Today is a day to look for the good in your peculiar acquaintances.

If you are peculiar, this is your day to be honored and appreciated. Chances are, you will find something peculiar about yourself, if you look hard enough. If you can’t find anything peculiar about yourself, then give some recognition and appreciation to your quirky friends and family.

Save the Eagles Day 2015
January 10, 2015 in the World

Save the Eagles Day is commemorated on the 10th of January every year to save the eagles from extinction. The eagles were once in extinction in the later part of 20th Century, but as on June 2007, the Bald Eagle- national bird of the United States, was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife, due to the assiduous work of scientists and good stewards of both public and private lands.

There are more then 70 species of eagles throughout the world; except Hawaii, where the bird never resided. Other species of birds are not so fortunate as the Bald Eagle because of the threat caused due to habitat loss, poaching, and pesticides.

Throughout history, eagle appeared in both mythology and heraldry, and has been recognized as a symbol of power, courage, freedom and immorality since the antediluvian times. It is believed in some religions that a high-soaring eagle touches the face of God. Legends of Mexico’s Aztecs so honored the bird that they built their capital, Tenochtitlan, at the spot where an eagle roosted on a cactus to raven a snake.

To honor Save the Eagles Day, we can look forward to protect eagles and the habitat of this most renowned and majestic bird. Donating to a wildlife sanctuary or turning to the government officials to strengthen environmental protection of waterways might help in saving the eagles. Planting trees and maintaining them in our own yards or local parks makes place for eagles to alight.

Houseplant Appreciation Day
January 10, 2015 in the World

Houseplant Appreciation Day is celebrated on January 10, 2015. A houseplant is a plant that is grown indoors in places such as residences and offices. Houseplants are commonly grown for decorative purposes, positive psychological effects, or health reasons such as indoor air purification. Plants used in this fashion are most commonly, though not always, tropical or semi-tropical.

Indoor plants reduce components of indoor air pollution, particularly volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, and xylene. The compounds are removed primarily by soil microorganisms. Plants can also remove CO2, which is correlated with lower work performance, from indoor areas. The effect has been investigated by NASA for use in spacecraft.

National Bittersweet Chocolate Day
January 10, 2015 in the USA

Bittersweet chocolate is dark chocolate that is sweetened with cane sugar. It may have a touch of vanilla, but never milk. It is thought to have come about because the bitter taste of chocolate didn’t suit the European taste palette.

The word chocolate is derived from “xocolatl” an Aztec word which means “bitter water”. Chocolate itself is derived from the hot frothy drink brought to Europe from the Aztecs. It took about 200 years to figure out how to solidify it and for the first chocolate ‘bar’ to be created around 1839.

Consuming bittersweet chocolate on a daily basis is actually quite good for you. All variations of dark chocolate contain antioxidants that lower blood pressure and help protect your heart.
