Tuesday, the 12th of May, 2015 is the 132th day in 2015 and in the 20th calendar week.
General Events:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Day
May 12, 2015 in the World
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Day is observed on May 12, 2015. May 12 is designated as International Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day (ME/CFS). The day is observed so that stakeholders have an occasion to improve the knowledge of “the public, policymakers, and healthcare professionals about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of ME/CFS, as well as the need for a better understanding of this complex illness.”
Chronic fatigue syndrome is the common name for a group of significantly debilitating medical conditions characterized by persistent fatigue and other specific symptoms that lasts for a minimum of six months in adults. The fatigue is not due to exertion, not significantly relieved by rest, and is not caused by other medical conditions. Symptoms of CFS include malaise after exertion; unrefreshing sleep, widespread muscle and joint pain, sore throat, headaches of a type not previously experienced, cognitive difficulties, chronic and severe mental and physical exhaustion, and other characteristic symptoms in a previously healthy and active person.
Although fatigue is a common symptom in many illnesses, CFS is comparatively rare. Estimates of prevalence vary from 7 to 3,000 cases of CFS for every 100,000 adults; national health organizations have estimated more than one million Americans and approximately a quarter of a million people in the UK have CFS. CFS occurs more often in women than men. The date for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day was chosen to honor the birthday of Florence Nightingale, an English army nurse who was a pioneer of the Red Cross Movement.
May 12th has been designated as International Awareness Day for Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND) since 1992. The diseases included in CIND include Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Fibromyalgia (FM), Gulf War Syndrome(GWS) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS)

International Nurses Day
May 12, 2015 in the World
International Nurses Day is observed on May 12, 2015. It is celebrated around the world to mark the contributions nurses make to society. In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing. Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses’ Day Kit. The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.
Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. Nurses may be differentiated from other health care providers by their approach to patient care, training, and scope of practice. Nurses practice in a wide diversity of practice areas with a different scope of practice and level of prescriber authority in each. Many nurses provide care within the ordering scope of physicians, and this traditional role has come to shape the historic public image of nurses as care providers.
The American Nurses Association states nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

Limerick Day 2015
May 12, 2015 in the World
Limerick Day is celebrated on May 12, 2015. It celebrates the birthday of Writer Edward Lear and Limerick poems. Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet, and is known now mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised. In 1846 Lear published A Book of Nonsense, a volume of limericks that went through three editions and helped popularise the form. A limerick is a short, humorous, often ribald or nonsense poem, especially one in five-line anapestic or amphibrachic meter with a strict rhyme scheme (AABBA), which is sometimes obscene with humorous intent. Lear wrote 212 limericks, mostly nonsense verse. It was customary at the time for limericks to accompany an absurd illustration of the same subject, and for the final line of the limerick to be a kind of conclusion, usually a variant of the first line ending in the same word.

National Odometer Day
May 12, 2015 in the USA
National Odometer Day is celebrated each year on May 12.  This is a day to learn a little bit about the odometer.
An odometer is an instrument that indicates the distance traveled by a vehicle.  It may be electronic, mechanical or a combination of both.
Odometer comes from the Greek words hodos meaning path or gateway andmetron, meaning measure.
In some countries, an odometer is called a mileometer, milometer or tripometer.
Odometers were first developed in the 1600’s for wagons and other horse-drawn vehicles in order to measure distances traveled.
Developed by Arthur P. and Charles H. Warner of Beloit, Wisconsin, the first odometer for automobiles appeared in 1903 and was patented as the Auto-Meter. It used a magnet and a rotating shaft to measure distances and also measured speed.
•Versions of the odometer may have been around since the time of Alexander the Great. Written accounts include highly accurate measurements of distances traveled by Alexander’s army that may have been measured with mechanical odometers. Actual descriptions of odometers date back to 27 BC and can be found in works by Vitruvius and Hero of Alexandria.
•The Chinese also had their own version of the odometer. It is believed to have been invented by the prolific scientist and inventor Zhang Heng in the late first century or early second century AD. It used the Chinese measurement “li,” which was approximately 500 meters. Like most odometers of the time, it was based on the operation of road-wheels of chariots.
