General Events:
International Day of Families
May 15, 2015 in the World
International Day of Families is observed on May 15, 2015. The holiday was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1992. In human context, a family is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence. In most societies it is the principal institution for the socialization of children.
From the perspective of children, the family is a “family of orientation”: the family serves to locate children socially and plays a major role in their enculturation and socialization. From the point of view of the parent(s), the family is a “family of procreation,” the goal of which is to produce and enculturate and socialize children.
However, producing children is not the only function of the family; in societies with a sexual division of labor, marriage, and the resulting relationship between two people, it is necessary for the formation of an economically productive household.

International MPS Awareness Day
May 15, 2015 in the World
Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) diseases are genetic lysosomal diseases (LD) caused by the body’s inability to produce specific enzymes. Normally, the body uses enzymes to break down and recycle materials in cells. In individuals with MPS the missing or insufficient enzyme prevents the proper recycling process, resulting in the storage of materials in virtually every cell of the body. As a result, cells do not perform properly and may cause progressive damage throughout the body, including the heart, bones, joints, respiratory system and central nervous system. While the disease may not be apparent at birth, signs and symptoms develop with age as more cells become damaged by the accumulation of cell materials.
International MPS Day began as a way to honor everyone in the MPS Community, to recognize, remember and rejoice in each other.
On International MPS Day we:
•Remember all the children and adults who suffer from MPS diseases.
•Think about the children we have lost.
•Think about the doctors and scientists who are dedicated to finding a cure for MPS.
•Remember each other and be thankful for the strength and support we both give and receive.

TSC Global Awareness Day (Tuberous Sclerosis Complex)
May 15, 2015 in the World
TSC Global Awareness Day is sponsored internationally by Tuberous Sclerosis Complex International (TSCi), a worldwide consortium of TSC organizations. On May 15, tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) organizations around the world to observe the fourth annual TSC Global Awareness Day. On this day, thousands of individuals and families affected by TSC will join together to increase public awareness of the rare disease and share their stories of hope for the future.
TSC is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in vital organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidneys, skin and lungs. It is also the leading genetic cause of both autism and epilepsy. TSC is as common as Lou Gehrig’s disease or cystic fibrosis but is virtually unknown by the general population.
“One million people around the world are estimated to have TSC, with 50,000 or more right here in the United States,” explained Kari Luther Rosbeck, President & CEO of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance). “Currently, there is no cure for TSC but ongoing research continues to be promising, not only for this disorder, but also for those suffering from autism, epilepsy and even cancer, because of TSC’s relation to the same genetic pathway.”

National Chocolate Chip Day
May 15, 2015 in the USA
National Chocolate Chip Day is celebrated on May 15, 2015. It’s a day to celebrate the small chunks of chocolate.Chocolate chips are often sold in a round, flat-bottomed teardrop shape. They are available in numerous sizes, from large to miniature, but are usually less than 1 cm in diameter. Today, chocolate chips are very popular as a baking ingredient in the United States and the chocolate chip cookie is regarded as a quintessential American dessert. Chocolate chips are also available in Europe, Australia, and other parts of the world.
Chocolate chips are a required ingredient in chocolate chip cookies, which were invented in 1937 when Ruth Graves Wakefield of the Toll House Inn in the town of Whitman, Massachusetts added cut-up chunks of a semi-sweet Nestlé chocolate bar to a cookie recipe. The cookies were a huge success, and Wakefield reached an agreement in 1939 with Nestlé to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate. Initially, Nestlé included a small chopping tool with the chocolate bars. In 1941 Nestlé and one or more of its competitors started selling the chocolate in chip (or “morsel”) form.
