Tuesday, the 30th of June, 2015is the 181th day in 2015 and in the 27th calendar week.
General Events:
Leap Second Time Adjustment Day
June 30, 2015 in the World
A leap second is a one-second adjustment that is occasionally applied to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in order to keep its time of day close to the mean solar time, or UT1. Without such a correction, time reckoned by Earth’s rotation drifts away from atomic time because of irregularities in the Earth’s rate of rotation. Since this system of correction was implemented in 1972, 25 such leap seconds have been inserted. The most recent one happened on June 30, 2012 at 23:59:60 UTC. A leap second, the 26th, will again be inserted at the end of June 30, 2015 at 23:59:60 UTC.
The UTC time standard, which is widely used for international timekeeping and as the reference for civil time in most countries, uses the international system (SI) definition of the second, based on atomic clocks. Like most time standards, UTC defines a grouping of seconds into minutes, hours, days, months, and years. However, the duration of one mean solar day is slightly longer than 24 hours (86400 SI seconds). Therefore, if the UTC day were defined as precisely 86400 SI seconds, the UTC time-of-day would slowly drift apart from that of solar-based standards, such as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and its successor UT1. The purpose of a leap second is to compensate for this drift, by occasionally scheduling some UTC days with 86401 or 86399 SI seconds.

Meteor Day 2015
June 30, 2015 in the World
Meteor Day is celebrated on June 30, 2015. It commemorates the Tunguska event in 1908. The Tunguska event was an enormously powerful explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River at about 00:14 UT on June 30. The explosion is believed to have been caused by the air burst of a small asteroid or comet at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) above the Earth’s surface. Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the object’s size, on the order of 100 metres (330 ft). It is the largest impact event on or near Earth in recorded history.
Although the asteroid or comet appears to have burst in the air rather than hitting the surface, this event still is referred to as an impact. Estimates of the energy of the blast range from 3 to as high as 30 megatons of TNT with 10–15 megatons of TNT. This is about 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan; and about two-fifths the power of the later Soviet Union’s own Tsar Bomba (the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated).
The Tunguska explosion knocked down an estimated 80 million trees over an area covering 2,150 square kilometres (830 sq mi). It is estimated that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale. An explosion of this magnitude is capable of destroying a large metropolitan area. This possibility has helped to spark discussion of asteroid deflection strategies.

Asteroid Day 2015
June 30, 2015 in the World
Asteroid Day is an annual global awareness movement that brings people from around the world together to learn about asteroids and what we can do to protect our planet, our families, communities, and future generations. Asteroid Day will be held on the anniversary of the 1908 Siberian Tunguska event, the largest asteroid impact on Earth in recent history.
Astrophysicist Dr. Brian May, founding member and lead guitarist of the rock band Queen, joined Lord Martin Rees, the UK Royal Astronomer at the London Science Museum to host a press conference to announce ASTEROID DAY, a global awareness campaign to educate the world about asteroids. A central focus of the event was the release of a 100x Declaration, calling for the 100fold increase in the detection and monitoring of asteroids. Lord Rees read the declaration, which resolves to “solve humanity’s greatest challenges to safeguard our families and quality of life on Earth in the future.
The Declaration calls for three key actions:
– Employ the available technology to detect and track nearEarth asteroids that threaten human populations
– A rapid hundredfold (100x) acceleration of the discovery and tracking of NEOS.
– Global adoption of Asteroid Day on June 30, 2015, to heighten awareness of the asteroid hazard and our efforts to prevent future impacts.
The 100x Declaration was signed by more than 100 noted scientists, physicists, artists and business leaders from 30 countries, including, Richard Dawkins, Bill Nye, Brian Cox, Anousheh Ansari, Kip Thorne, Stewart Brand, investors Shervin Pishevar and Steve Jurvetson, Alan Eustace and Peter Norvig of Google, Peter Gabriel, Jane Luu, Helen Sharman, Jill Tarter and more than 38 astronauts and cosmonauts.

National Buttercrunch Day
June 29, 2015 in the USA
This unofficial national food holiday celebrates this toffee candy. Buttercrunch is a combination of toffee, covered with chocolate. It has a crunchy texture and a caramel flavor. Variations on the recipe include toasted almond sprinkles.
Making buttercrunch calls for a good candy thermometer and some cooking experience. Creating the toffee involves caramelizing sugar at high temperatures, which requires precision, timing and the right tools and safety techniques for a successful outcome. Buttercrunch can be served on top of ice cream, or on it’s own. Buttercrunch flavored cookies or cakes are other ways to enjoy the sweet treat.
The beginning of National Buttercrunch day is not well documented. However, a related food holiday, National Almond Butter Crunch Day is celebrated on June 29th. The crunchy candy, sometimes called just buttercrunch but other times referred to as almond buttercrunch, was made famous in World War II. A buttercrunch candy called Almond Roca, made by Brown and Haley was shipped in tins to U.S. troops overseas.

‘Spirit Of The Drums’

American Indian Spiritual Relaxing Healing Music

~~Published on Nov 18, 2013~~

Powerful Native American Music stylings

The drum is a powerful tool in Native American Indian/First Nations culture. The drums are the literal “heartbeat” of our spirits …. and we express that through our music and dance. Here is a cool new Flute, Drum & Guitar upbeat healing song honoring the Spirit Of The Drums …. along with some superb images of the USA Desert Southwest.

I received permission to share this wonderfully done piece and so I’m making it my IOTD!! Enjoy! 😀

Credit is on the photo!! 😉 Thank you very much, Andy! xoxo
