Different Colored Eyes Day
July 12, 2015 in the World
The origin of Different Colored Eyes Day is currently unknown, but it was most likely created by someone with heterochromia iridum. This holiday celebrates heterochromia iridum, also called heterochromia iridis or simply heterochromia, which is a difference in coloration of the iris. In complete heterochromia, one iris is a different color from the second iris. In partial heterochromia or sectoral heterochromia, part of one iris is a different color from the rest of that same iris. Different Colored Eyes Day also celebrates diversity of eye color! Popular eye colors include brown, hazel, grey, blue, and green.
Celebrate the holiday by looking into the mirror and appreciating how beautiful your eyes are! Start a conversation with friends about eyes and eye colors. While you’re at it, wish your friends a “Happy Different Colored Eyes Day!” During breakfast, peek through the center of a doughnut! Wink at someone today! Look into your significant other’s eyes and express your love.
Different Colored Eyes Day Fun Facts:
– Less than 1% of the world population has heterochromia iridum (different colored eyes).
– Famous people with heterochromia iridum include Alexander the Great, Alice Eve,   Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Seymour, Jessica Cauffiel, Kate Bosworth, Kathleen Wilhoite, Mila Kunis, Simon Pegg, and more!
– Brown is the most common eye color in the world. Over 55% of the world population has brown eyes!
– Green is the rarest eye color in the world. Only 1-2% of the world population has green eyes!
– In some cases, people with albinism can have eyes that appear to be red, pink, or purple!

The Twelfth 2015
July 12, 2015 in Ireland
The Twelfth is celebrated on July 12, 2015. The Twelfth (also called The Glorious Twelfth or Orangemen’s Day) is a yearly Protestant celebration. It originated in Ireland during the 18th century. It celebrates the Glorious Revolution (1688) and victory of Protestant king William of Orange over Catholic king James II at the Battle of the Boyne (1690). Members of the Orange Order and Protestant marching bands hold large parades throughout Northern Ireland and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of the world where Orange lodges have been set up. Streets are also decorated with British flags and bunting. The Twelfth is a public holiday in Northern Ireland. While it is a Protestant celebration, not all Northern Irish Protestants celebrate it, whether due to political or cultural reasons or indifference.

National Simplicity Day
July 12, 2015 in the USA
Author, naturalist, philosopher, historian, tax resister, abolitionist, development critic, surveyor, and leading transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12, 1817.  July 12 celebrates National Simplicity Day in his honor.  Thoreau was an advocate for living a life of simplicity.
Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862)  is well-known, by many, for his book“Walden”, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings.  He asserted that: “ as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex”.
In our fast, ever-increasing busy lifestyles, National Simplicity Day is the time to, take a step back and begin to simplify our lives. One can start by slowing down, tuning into nature, enjoying the simple things in life, decluttering and striving for balance.  Once you have done this, you can begin to enjoy the many stress-reducing pleasures and benefits of a simple lifestyle.
“My riches consist not in the extent of my possessions but in the fewness of my wants.”
                                                               – J. Botherton
