General Events:
Elephant Appreciation Day
September 22, 2015 in the World
Elephant Appreciation Day is celebrated on September 22, 2015. Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae. Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia. The largest living terrestrial animals, male African elephants can reach a height of 4 m (13 ft) and weigh 7,000 kg (15,000 lb). These animals have several distinctive features, including a long proboscis or trunk used for many purposes, particularly for grasping objects.
African elephants are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), while the Asian elephant is classed as endangered. One of the biggest threats to elephant populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are poached for their ivory tusks. Other threats to wild elephants include habitat destruction and conflicts with local people. Elephants are used as working animals in Asia. In the past they were used in war; today, they are often put on display in zoos and circuses. Elephants are highly recognisable and have been featured in art, folklore, religion, literature and popular culture.
Elephants exhibit mirror self-recognition, an indication of self-awareness and cognition that has also been demonstrated in some apes and dolphins. Elephants are popularly thought of as having an excellent memory. This could have a factual basis; they possibly have cognitive maps to allow them to remember large-scale spaces over long periods of time. Individuals appear to be able to keep track of the current location of their family members. Scientists debate the extent to which elephants feel emotion. They appear to show interest in the bones of their own kind, regardless of whether they are related.

Hobbit Day 2015
September 22, 2015 in the World
Hobbit Day is the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the books both Bilbo and Frodo were said to be born on September 22nd, but of different years. Bilbo was born in the year of 2890 and Frodo in the year of 2968 in the Third Age (1290 and 1368 respectively in Shire-Reckoning.)
The American Tolkien Society first proclaimed Hobbit Day and Tolkien Week in 1978, and defines them as this: “Tolkien Week is observed as the calendar week containing September 22, which is always observed as Hobbit Day”, but acknowledges that Hobbit Day pre-dates their designation.
Due to the discrepancies between the Shire calendar and the Gregorian calendar there is some debate about when to celebrate Hobbit Day, since the actual birthday would be between September 12 and 14 the Gregorian calendar, as explained in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings.
The Fellowship of the Ring opened with a celebration of Bilbo’s birthday. It was a large party with food, fireworks, dancing and much merriment. Some Tolkien fans celebrate with having parties and feasts emulating the hobbit’s parties. Other fans celebrate by simply going barefooted in honour of the hobbits, who don’t wear shoes.
Some schools and libraries use this as an opportunity to pique interest in Tolkien’s work by putting up displays and hosting events.

World Car Free Day
September 22, 2015 in the World
World Car Free Day is celebrated on September 22, 2015. A Car-Free Day encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day. Organized events are held in some cities and countries. The event promotes improvement of mass transit, cycling and walking, and the development of communities where jobs are closer to home and where shopping is within walking distance. The events, which vary by location, give motorists and commuterists an idea of their locality with fewer cars.
The 1994 Car Free Day Call set out a challenge for a city, neighborhood or group: Spend one carefully prepared day without cars, study and observe closely what exactly goes on during that day and reflect publicly and collectively on the lessons of this experience and on what might be prudently and creatively done next to build on these. Car-Free days are held in many U.S. cities, in Europe and in Japan.
