World Cerebral Palsy Day
October 7, 2015 in the World
World Cerebral Palsy Day is an innovation project that was launched in 2012 by Cerebral Palsy Alliance (Australia) and United Cerebral Palsy (USA). It is supported by over 270 cerebral palsy service organisations, universities, parent groups, research institutions, student groups, schools and children’s hospitals from 46 countries. More than an awareness day, the project aims to gather ideas from people with cerebral palsy and their supporters, and make the best of those ideas a reality.
The theme is “Change My World in One Minute”. Participants post text or a video for an idea that, if invented, would change their world. The idea must take no longer than one minute to read or view.
In 2012, more than 470 ideas were posted on the World CP Day website. Three ideas were shortlisted and then the call went out to inventors. A research team from the University of Virginia (USA) won the major prize. They developed a prototype solar powered wheelchair which was an idea posted by Alper Sirvan, a man with cerebral palsy in Turkey. The wheelchair prototype was presented to Alper on World CP Day 2013.
On January 20 2015 the call went out to inventors, makers, engineers and researchers to create a ‘Sponge House’ – a bump-proof living space for people with cerebral palsy who have unsteady balance and movement.
Participation is open to any non-profit organisation keen to create a better world for people with cerebral palsy. There is no cost to join the campaign, which is supported through the generosity of the Allergan Foundation.

Bald and Free Day
October 7, 2015 in the USA
Bald and Free Day honors those of us with a beautiful, shiny top. You don’t’ have to be bald to celebrate this day. But, it helps. People who are married to, or related to a bald headed person can celebrate with the honoree.
Enough with the bald jokes. There will be zero tolerance for them today. Rather, today is a day to cherish and appreciate the freedom that comes with being bald. While the rest of us are spending money on hair cuts, hair shampoo, hair sprays, combs, and such, the bald guys is smiling as he saves money and time.
There’s nothing wrong with having no hair, or a ‘chrome dome’! Be Bald And Free Day is all about being liberated, leaving your hat or wig at home, and facing the world without hair.
