General Events:
World Egg Day 2015
October 9, 2015 in the World
World Egg Day is celebrated on October 09, 2015. It is celebrated each year on the second Friday in October. World Egg Day is a unique opportunity to help raise awareness of the benefits of eggs. It was introduced by the International Egg Commission in 1996. The main objective of this day of action is to boost the consumption of eggs.
Chicken eggs are widely used in many types of dishes, both sweet and savory, including many baked goods. Some of the most common preparation methods include scrambled, fried, hard-boiled, soft-boiled, omelettes and pickled. They can also be eaten raw, though this is not recommended for people who may be especially susceptible to salmonellosis.
Eggs add protein to a person’s diet, as well as various other nutrients. As an ingredient, egg yolks are an important emulsifier in the kitchen, and are also used as a thickener in custards. The albumen, or egg white, contains protein, but little or no fat, and can be used in cooking separately from the yolk.

Curious Events Day
October 9, 2015 in the World
What is the world’s greatest mystery? How one can become famous for being famous? How the empty milk carton is presumed to live in the fridge? What cats actually do all day? The latter one is fun to investigate with a camera on a collar, for any curious cat owners out there.
Curious Events Day celebrates the great mysteries of the world, possibly even greater ones than the ones already listed above. Does the Loch Ness Monster exist? How are crop circles made? Is the world really run by a reptilian elite race?
Celebrate the day by pondering upon whatever makes you curious. It might be a big issue or it might be a small issue. Let’s hope it’s something more fun that discovering the source of the empty milk carton!

Leif Erikson Day
October 9, 2015 in the USA
Leif Erikson Day is an annual American observance occurring in 2015 on October 9. It honors Leif Ericson, the Norse explorer who brought the first Europeans known to have set foot in North America. In the U.S. the day is also used as a holiday to swim and imitate Vikings. October 9th is not associated with any particular event in Leif Erikson’s life. The date was chosen because the ship Restauration coming from Stavanger, Norway, arrived in New York Harbor on October 9, 1825 at the start of the first organized immigration from Norway to the United States
In 1963, the U.S. Representative from Duluth, John Blatnik, introduced a bill to observe Leif Erikson Day nationwide. The following year Congress adopted this unanimously. In 1964, the United States Congress authorized and requested the President to create the observance through an annual proclamation. Lyndon B. Johnson and each President since have done so. Presidents have used the proclamation to praise the contributions of Americans of Nordic descent generally and the spirit of discovery. In addition to the federal observance, some states officially commemorate Leif Erikson Day, particularly in the Upper Midwest, where large numbers of people from the Nordic countries settled.

National Fire Prevention Day
October 9, 2015 in the USA
Always on October 9th. Fire prevention week is during the week in which  October 9th falls.
According to legend, on October 8, 1871, Mrs. O’Leary was in her barn, milking her cow. The cow kicked over a lamp, which started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The fire burned for over 27 hours. When it was over,  more than 300 people were killed, 100,000 people were left homeless, and over 17,000 structures were destroyed.
The Great Chicago fire sparked major efforts in fire prevention.  Forty years later, the Fire Marshall’s Association of North America(FMANA) held the first Fire Prevention Day. In 1920 , President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Fire Prevention Week.
The Saturday during Fire Prevention Week is Fire Service Recognition Day.
Remember “EDITH”, which stand for “Exit Drills In The Home”. Today is a good day to have a practice drill.
Did You Know? Dalmatians became fire dogs because they were often kept around the horses at fire houses to guard them.
