International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction
October 13, 2015 in the World

International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction is observed on October 13, 2015. The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations. In 2002, by a further resolution, the General Assembly decided to maintain the annual observance as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including prevention, mitigation and preparedness. In 2009, the UN General Assembly decided to designate October 13 as the official date and also changed the name to International Day for Disaster Reduction.

International African Penguin Awareness Day
October 13, 2015 in the World

The African penguin Spheniscus demersus is endemic to southern Africa, breeding at 28 localities – from Hollams Bird Island in central Namibia to Bird Island in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. The overall population may have been in the order of one million pairs in the 1920s, but had decreased to about 141 000 pairs in 1956/57. It fell to about 69 000 pairs in 1979/80, to some 63 000 pairs in 2001, 57 000 pairs in 2004/5 and 36 000 pairs in 2006/07.

By 2011, there were only about 20 000 breeding pairs in South Africa. Consequently, the present population represents only some 2.5% of its level 80 years ago. The African penguin has a status of “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because the breeding population has decreased by more than 50% in the three most recent generations … and the decrease is continuing.

Devoting a day to the African penguin should mean devoting ourselves to learning as much as we can about these charismatic birds and pledging to treat our planet as best we can. Penguins are generally considered to be a good sentinel species for the ocean environment. This means that their relative wellbeing is a good indicator of the health of the overall ecosystem.

To quote the eminent Lloyd Spencer Davis, ‘Saving penguins is not really about saving penguins; it is about saving every living thing – all of us.’ In view of the fact that the downward trend in African penguin numbers currently shows no sign of reversing, immediate conservation action is required to prevent further declines, or else this species could be extinct in just 15 years if the current rate of decline continues.

International Skeptics Day
October 13, 2015 in the World

Non-believers, conspiracy theorists and Doubting Thomases will get a kick out of today’s holiday. Then again, maybe they won’t. But believe it or not, October 13 is International Skeptics Day. Or is it? We suspect that a real skeptic created this day. And, they did so by first creating doubt about the date to celebrate this special day. We found three dates: January 13th, October 13th, and the first Friday of the year. While Friday the 13th sounds intriguing, we have our doubts……….

By definition, a skeptic is a person who questions or doubts facts and theories. He, or she, is a mis-believer. A skeptic does not accept the “Given”. If you are inclined to doubt things that you see or hear, then International Skeptics Day is for you.

Skeptics Day encourages you to respect and listen to your inner skeptic, and all of the skeptical people that you know. Not everything can be as good as it sounds, some things are bound to be disappointing, and things can only get worse; right?

National Yorkshire Pudding Day
October 13, 2015 in the USA

Yorkshire pudding is an iconic British pastry similar to a popover. The first recipes for the dish appeared in the 1700s, but the exact origin is unknown. Yorkshire Pudding is made by combining flour, eggs, salt, milk, and pan drippings from prime rib or roast beef. The result is a light, doughy roll with a small well in the center that is usually filled with gravy.

Yorkshire Pudding is still a very popular dish in modern-day Britain, and often makes an appearance at big Sunday dinners. In fact, culinary historians refer to it as the national dish of England. To celebrate National Yorkshire Pudding Day, make a delicious homemade batch to enjoy with your family!
