Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day
October 21, 2015 in the World
Iodine Deficiency is the world’s most prevalent yet easily preventable cause of brain damage. The micronutrient deficiency disorder is most commonly seen among poor, pregnant women and preschool children. It results in stunted physical and mental growth and poses serious threat to the economy of developing countries. Supplementation of small quantities of iodine at low cost can help prevent the incidence of this serious disorder.
The primary sources of dietary iodine are saltwater fish, seaweed, and trace amounts in grains, bread, miIk, eggs, and meat. Fruits contain little iodine, as do vegetables with the exception of spinach. Iodine deficiency disorder primarily occurs in mountainous regions such as the Himalayas, the European Alps, and the Andes, where iodine has been washed away by glaciation and flooding. Iodine deficiency also occurs in lowland regions far from the oceans, such as central Africa and Eastern Europe.

Celebration of The Mind Day
October 21, 2015 in the World
The Celebration of Mind uses puzzles, games, and magic to delight, instruct, and bring people together in a spirit of fun, both at annual gatherings and as a year-round repository of resources. As Martin Gardner said, you can learn more when you’re in a state of entrancement, and that’s our guiding principle. On and around October 21 every year, Celebration of Mind events all over the world share the legacy and many interests of this prolific, accessible American writer, who over a 50-year period introduced general audiences to many fascinating topics in mathematics and science. In the process we continue to create and collect resources that inspire new generations to explore a wide range of intellectual pursuits, and their intersections.
Anyone who loves puzzles, math, Lewis Carroll, critical thinking, and/or intellectual challenges is invited to participate in an event in their area, or to consider hosting an event of their own. The Celebration of Mind site offers resources for finding a local event, as well as plenty of possible activities for potential hosts as well as teachers, parents, and learners.

National Reptile Awareness Day
October 21, 2015 in the USA
Each year on October 21, people across the nation celebrate National Reptile Awareness Day. This day was created not only for reptile lovers to celebrate, but also to promote education, conservation and appreciation for reptiles. It is a day to learn about their natural habitats and the ecological threats that they are facing.
Habitat loss and the threat of extinction are significant concerns in the world of reptillian life. Reptile Day promotes awareness of all things reptillian, encouraging learning about different types of reptiles, their natural environments and ecological challenges.
A reptile is any amniote that is neither a mammal nor a bird, is cold-blooded, has scales or scutes and can lay eggs on land. ( a scute is a bony external plate or scale, as on the shell of a turtle or the skin of crocodilians.)
