NANO Day Thirteen

I’m sooo happy! Came home, took some sinus and headache medication. Ate a bit and then started back in. The story is coming together. I’m near the number but not the end of the story… I’ll be pushing through this weekend to start tying it up.

Sadie Hawkins Day 2015
November 13, 2015 in the World
An American folk event, Sadie Hawkins Day is a pseudo-holiday that originated in Al Capp’s classic hillbilly comic strip, Li’l Abner (1934–1978). This inspired real-world Sadie Hawkins dances, where girls ask boys out. Capp’s creation captured the imagination of young people, particularly in high schools and on college campuses.
In the original story, Sadie’s father was worried that she would never be married, so he announced a race for all of the town’s eligible bachelors. Sadie was ordered to run after them, and he declared that, “Th’ one she ketches’ll be her husbin.”
Capp originally created it as a comic plot device, but by the early 1940s the comic strip event had swept the nation and acquired a life of its own. By 1952, Sadie Hawkins Day was reportedly celebrated at 40,000 known venues. It became a day-long event observed in the United States on the Saturday that follows November 9.
When Capp created the event, it wasn’t his intention to have it occur annually on a specific date because it inhibited his freewheeling plotting. However, due to its enormous popularity and the numerous fan letters he received, Capp obligingly made it a tradition in the strip every November, lasting four decades.
Sadie Hawkins Day has long been celebrated on November 13 of every year.- The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Indian Pudding Day
November 13, 2015 in the USA
National Indian Pudding Day is observed on November 13, 2015. Indian pudding is a traditional New England dessert, “a cold-weather classic”. Seventeenth-century English colonists brought hasty pudding to North America and transformed it completely.
Lacking wheat, they substituted cornmeal, a grain they learned to cultivate from the indigenous peoples, which led to the new name Indian pudding, derived from their name for cornmeal, Indian meal. They substituted milk, which was plentiful, for water and added locally available sweeteners, either molasses or maple syrup, and spices when available, typically cinnamon and ground ginger.
Other traditional ingredients include butter and eggs for a smoother consistency and raisins and nuts for flavor and contrasting texture. Finally, Indian pudding is baked in a slow oven for several hours, transforming its texture from the porridge-like quality of hasty pudding to a smoother texture more typical of custard puddings.
The 20th century’s commercial puddings with their industrially perfect smooth consistency displaced Indian pudding and its cooking time had little appeal for the modern home cook. It is still associated with autumn holidays and occasionally revived by restaurants. It is usually served warm and sometimes accompanied by vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
