January 11, 2016 – National Hot Toddy Day

How to make a hot toddy:
1 oz brandy, whiskey or rum
1 Tbsp honey
1/4 lemon
1 cup hot water
1 tea bag
Mix the ingredients in a coffee mug and stir until the honey is melted.
There are many variations to the original recipe for hot toddy, which emerged sometime during the 18th century. You can choose to make a hot toddy with rum, whisky, brandy, tea, coffee, cocoa, apple cider, butter, spices, lemon, or sweeteners. To make a hot toddy for a cold or the flu, add cinnamon sticks and cloves, which will help clear a blocked nose, relieve a stuffy head, and soothe a sore throat. No matter what variation you prefer, treat yourself to a hot toddy drink before bed during the wet and cold months of winter. It is sure to take away your aches and help you get through sleepless nights!
Skeen, is this your recipe? Thank you!! xoxo

General Events:
Coming of Age Day
January 11, 2016 in Japan
Coming of Age Day is celebrated on January 11, 2016. Coming of Age Day is a Japanese holiday held annually on the second Monday of January. It is held in order to congratulate and encourage all those who have reached the age of majority (20 years old) over the past year, and to help them realize that they have become adults. Festivities include coming of age ceremonies held at local and prefectural offices, as well as after-parties amongst family and friends.

International Thank You Day
January 11, 2016 in the World
Every year people all over the world celebrate International Thank You Day that falls on January 11. This celebration is the ideal opportunity to show your gratitude to people who make your days what they are.
The origin of International Thank You Day is unclear. But this doesn’t make the concept of International Thank You Day less appealing.
Celebrate this day by showing your appreciation to people who make your life better and more beautiful. One single word can make people who surround you happier, isn’t it great?
Unfortunately we often forget to show gratitude to others. We think only about ourselves and don’t notice all the things that relatives and friends do for us. Be polite, think of others and then simple “thank you” will make their day better.
This day is considered as one of the most polite days. But don’t forget thank all people who deserve it during the rest of the year.

Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend’s Day
January 11, 2016 in the World
Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend’s Day is observed on January 11, 2016. Puddles are often a source of recreation for children, who regard jumping in puddles as one of the “up-sides” to rain. A children’s nursery rhyme records the story of Doctor Foster and his encounter with a puddle in Gloucester.
Puddles are usually formed from rain water or from irrigation. A puddle is generally small enough for an adult to step over, shallow enough to walk through, and too small to traverse in a boat or raft.
Puddles commonly form during rain, and can cause problems for transport. Due to the angle of the road, puddles tend to be forced by gravity to gather on the edges of the road. This can cause splashing as cars drive through the puddles, which causes water to be sprayed onto pedestrians on the pavement.

National Hot Toddy Day
January 11, 2016 in the USA
A hot toddy is a delicious drink made with honey, lemon, hot water, and the spirit of your choice (usually whiskey, brandy, or rum). It’s the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day, and a few sips can also relieve cold or flu symptoms.
Hot toddies originated in Scotland sometime during the 18th century. While the exact details are unknown, historians believe that the recipe was developed to make the taste of Scotch whiskey more palatable. (Apparently the women of the day didn’t care for the smoky, peat flavor.) One theory suggests that the word “toddy” evolved from “Tod’s well” (also known as Todian Spring), the water supply for Edinburgh.
Today there are many variations on the original hot toddy recipe. Some versions call for tea, coffee, cocoa, apple cider, spices, or even butter. To celebrate National Hot Toddy Day, brew up your favorite type of hot toddy and enjoy!
