it’s official

I am now the third shift Access (crisis) therapist!

I applied for it and after they adjusted a few – un nuh ain’t doing it changes. I reapplied and accepted the position. And it’s official, my first day will be August 1st!! I was supposed to start on July 31st, but after reviewing that I’m working two weeks straight without a break, my Boss had the start day re-adjusted too! Woot!

SO! Sunday through Thursday I’ll be on the overnight shift! Nine pm to Eight am, except on Sundays when I start at Eight pm. YES!! I get my Fridays off again!! and most Saturdays-I’m still on the On-Call and holiday rotation schedule. Bonus though those are Access Hours!! (means more moola!! 😉 )

honestly after speaking to my doctor who keeps informing me I NEED to get my stress down, we agreed that a third shift would be beneficial for my health, and I’d finally be able to make my appointments!! Yes, I do speak with my provider. 😉 And most of the time we agree with each other. LOL

So this week, I’m still on 8am to 5pm.

An Interview with Amber. ;)

In honor of FCBD I was very fortunate to be able to do an online interview with Amber of Kokomo Toys
You collect it, it might be here! 😉

HI and thank you for doing this…feel free to take your time, I understand being busy. 😉
Hi Michelle, I apologize for the major delay. We’ve been busy and I’ve been busy catching up after being sick a few days. Yuk!
What impetus made you decide on an action figure toy store?
We worked in the manufacturing world for many years and we decided it wasn’t for us. We wanted to do something more worthwhile with our time and we had some business savvy so we chose what we liked doing the most, which was toys 🙂 But I promise it’s actual work, haha
Was your decision based on location, or something else?
Partially, there was nothing like this around us.  We were online only initially but wanted to be more of a community spot. Somewhere people could talk & enjoy toys. Mingle and mix and be if you will. We opened close to home originally, but the move to downtown seemed only natural as that’s where toys store’s used to always be. We wanted something more nostalgic than the mall or an office space.
Was this your first choice (as a business)?
It was the only choice!

Are you a geek yourself? or How would you describe yourself?
Probably more than most of the customers that visit the shop lol. We spend half of our time either talking about or quoting movies/TV shows/cartoons and the other half playing with their toys 😉 I work a lot, and I do mean A LOT, so we try to have fun 🙂

Are there any perks to owning your own business? Like what?
Being the boss is awesome because you make all the rules and answer to no one!! But that also makes it extremely more difficult because your success or failure is dependent on you and your choices. So you have to own up all your decisions. And the boss doesn’t believe you when you call in sick.

Do you participate in any way with your local community? How? Here’s your chance to give a shout out to your community projects. 😉
I try to participate in any way I can, although my free time is very limited. I do, however, sit on the local visitors bureau and try to help bring new people to our city. We also donate toys to a local charity telethon auction every year called “We Care”.  As well as donate items & recyclables to different local charities like the Kokomo Rescue Mission, Jackson Street Commons (housing for homeless veterans) & the Domestic Violence Shelter.

Do you feel it’s easier or harder being a female entrepreneur? What advice would you give you a young female entrepreneur or anyone looking to start a business? What advice would you give someone to stay the course, and not give up?
It’s always a little more difficult being a woman in a predominantly male field of work. It’s a little frustrating when people approach your male customer instead of realizing you, the chick behind the counter is actually the owner. But it’s usually a pleasant surprise for them 🙂 Always stay the course, but realize you will need thick skin to do so. Don’t take it too personally that they don’t recognize you as the owner, then drop some nerd knowledge on them 😉

and from one of my readers: What do you collect? Do you go to comic conventions?
I have collected and uncollected many things over the years. I had a very large He-Man/She-Ra collection. But right now I’m really into the Ashley Wood Art that 3A has been putting out. I like to collect things I like and not necessarily a complete line of anything. So I have some different pieces from him, mostly the panda suits O.o

I do not get out of the shop much to get anywhere. I rarely make conventions, as I HATE lines, but I’ll hit a toy show every now and then.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer these. 😉

Thanks, Michelle!!

We’ll be celebrating “Geek Street” all summer! We will try to have some fun stuff going on so stay tuned! You can follow us on FB & Instagram (plus Geek Street has it’s own FB page now).

And tada, my second online interview has been completed. And I really want to thank Amber for her time! That is the reason for online interviews, we don’t have to get together which for the majority of my friends is highly difficult to do. 😉 And I waited a bit on this before posting as I wanted it for the FCBD weekend!! And Bonus, it’s the opening day of Marvel’s Civil War! 😀 So what a great day to post this interview! 😉   and as for the FCBD angle;there’s a comic book store right next door to Kokomo Toys. 😉

***Want to be interviewed, I’m looking for artists, cosplayers, and hobbiers. My friend, Brad makes proton packs and I’d love to do an interview with him, I have a lot of artist friends and I’d love to interview one of you too. As for the cosplayers, I have a lot of you I want to interview. Message me on FB if you’d like to be interviewed. It’s by email, and I’ll send you the list of questions. 😉

thank you, M'Chel

Happy Happy, Joy Joy! woohoo even! lol

Free Comic Book Day
May 3, 2014 in the World

Free Comic Book Day is observed annually on May 03, 2014. The event was established by Joe Field of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, California. He brainstormed the idea in his “Big Picture” column in the August 2001 issue of “Comics & Games Retailer” magazine. It is a promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores.

Free Comic Book Day has often been tied to the release of a major theatrical film adaptation of a well-known superhero property, in order to take advantage of the film’s heavy promotion and related press about the comic book medium. The first event took place in 2002, just a day after the opening of the first Spider-Man movie. However, successful events did not have specific date tie-ins to comics-related movie openings.

A comic book is a publication of comic art in the form of sequential juxtaposed panels that represent individual scenes. Panels are often accompanied by brief descriptive prose and written narrative, usually dialog contained in word balloons. The first comic book appeared in the United States in 1933 and was a reprinting of earlier newspaper comic strips

World Press Freedom Day
May 3, 2014 in the World

The World Press Freedom Day takes place on May 03, 2014. This date was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.

UNESCO marks World Press Freedom Day by conferring the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on a deserving individual, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defense or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger. Created in 1997, the prize is awarded on the recommendation of an independent jury of 14 news professionals. Names are submitted by regional and international non-governmental organizations working for press freedom, and by UNESCO member states.

UNESCO also marks World Press Freedom Day each year by bringing together media professionals, press freedom organizations and UN agencies to assess the state of press freedom worldwide and discuss solutions for addressing challenges. Freedom of the press or freedom of the media is the freedom of communication and expression through vehicles including various electronic media and published materials. While such freedom mostly implies the absence of interference from an overreaching state, its preservation may be sought through constitutional or other legal protections.

Lumpy Rug Day 2014
May 3, 2014 in the World

Lumpy Rug Day is celebrated on May 03, 2014. It’s a day to take action to check and smoothen your rugs: a rug shouldn’t be lumpy! The term “carpet” is often used interchangeably with the term “rug”. Some define a carpet as stretching from wall to wall. Another definition treats rugs as of lower quality or of smaller size, with carpets quite often having finished ends.

National Two Different Colored Shoes Day
May 3, 2014 in the USA

It’s National Two Different Colored Shoes Day! For 364 days a year, most people wear matching footwear, but today is your excuse to step outside the box.

Dr. Arlene Kaiser created National Two Different Colored Shoes Day to recognize and celebrate human diversity. According to Dr. Kaiser, the simple act of wearing two different colored shoes proclaims your individuality. By taking this “positive risk,” you can demonstrate your willingness to be different, and show your appreciation for the unique people in your life.

Wearing two different colored shoes can be as simple as wearing a black shoe and a brown shoe, or as outrageous as wearing a flip-flop and a boot. However you decide to express yourself today, do so with pride! Happy National Two Different Colored Shoes Day!

Kentucky Derby
May 3, 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA

Today is the Kentucky Derby! Every year on the first Saturday of May, over 150,000 people gather in Louisville, Kentucky to witness the most exciting two minutes in sports. This afternoon, a group of three-year-old Thoroughbred horses will race for the chance to win the first “jewel” of the Triple Crown. It is an occasion famous for its extravagant hats, mint julep cocktails, and general pomp and circumstance.

The history of the Kentucky Derby is as exciting as the race itself. In 1863, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark attended the Grand Prix de Paris horserace in Paris. Inspired by what he saw, he returned to America and organized the construction of a beautiful new horseracing facility for the Louisville Jockey Club. Today we know it as the Churchill Downs. The first Kentucky Derby race took place at the track in 1875.

To celebrate this exciting annual event, invite friends and family over for a Kentucky Derby watch party!
