World Osteoporosis Day
October 20, 2014 in the World
World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated on October 20, 2014. World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually, and launches a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.
Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, World Osteoporosis Day involves campaigns by national osteoporosis patient societies from around the world with activities in over 90 countries. World Osteoporosis Day was launched on 20 October 1996 by the United Kingdom’s National Osteoporosis Society and supported by the European Commission.
Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease that is characterised by a decrease in bone mass and density and that leads to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis, the bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced, bone microarchitecture deteriorates, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone are altered.

National Brandied Fruit Day
October 20, 2014 in the USA
National Brandied Fruit Day celebrates sweet tasting fruit, soaked and marinated in brandy. This is a day that you have most certainly booked on your calendar, in eager anticipation. Well, it has finally arrived.
Brandied fruit…now that’s cause for a celebration! It is simple to make, all you need is a nice Brandy, sugar, a screw-top glass jar and, of course, fruit.
For each 100g of fruit, you should add approximately 20g of sugar. Pop them in a jar, adding the brandy until the fruit is fully submerged. This will prevent any fruit being exposed to the air and growing mold. Stir to ensure the brandy and sugar mix together fully. Finally, store the jar in a cupboard, or any storage space, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The mix should cure in a few months, so it’s best to plan a little ahead of time!
